The Government Council has approved the Plan of General Interest of Aragon (PIGA) for the logistics platform "La Melusa - Tamarite", an essential project for the transport of fresh products in the region of La Litera.

  • The new platform will cover almost 1.65 million square metres, distributed in logistics and residential areas.
  • The construction of a railway loading bay for 750-metre trains is planned at a later stage.
  • The "La Melusa-Tamarite" platform is expected to be operational in 3 years.

Distribution of areas

Subsector 1, dedicated to logistics, will occupy 1,392,575.84 square metres. This area, which stretches 4,000 metres parallel to the old N-240 road and has direct access to the A-22 motorway, is located three kilometres from the provincial border with Lleida. It also has a 5-kilometre railway line on the Zaragoza-Barcelona line.

Subsector 2 comprises a residential area of 21,040.00 square metres located to the south of the urban nucleus of Tamarite de Litera, next to the sports facilities, swimming pools, the Secondary School and green areas. This sector seeks to satisfy the demand for housing generated by the implementation of the logistics platform.

Project development

In Subsector 1, productive and tertiary activities will be centralised, including the construction of a rail freight station. In a future phase, the construction of a 750-metre rail loading bay will be approved on the Madrid Chamartín-Barcelona Estación de Francia line, near the Tamarite-Altorricón station, to maximise the facility's operability. This loading bay is expected to facilitate connections to Barcelona, the Mediterranean and France, as well as to Algeciras, Madrid and Irún.

Subsector 2 will be transferred in its entirety to the local and regional administrations, in compliance with the urban development obligations of the project.

Economic and Social Impactple

The first phase of the PIGA will create between 70 and 100 jobs. The second phase, which includes the construction of the railway siding and the road connection, will create more than 200 jobs.

It is estimated that the logistics platform 'La Melusa-Tamarite' will be operational within three years, significantly boosting the job market in the Comarca of La Litera.
